4 Careers in Healthcare That Don't Require Medical School (1065 hits)

Ask any group of kids what they want to be when they grow up and you can expect to hear several say they want to be a doctor, or maybe a nurse. Beyond those two choices, you're unlikely to hear any other health care career mentioned. That's because kids don't know about many other health care jobs, and most adults don't either. The fact is there are plenty of good options for work in the health care field that do not require years and years in college and medical school. Here are just a few to consider.

Respiratory Therapist

Among the many technicians who perform work ordered by a physician are respiratory therapists. These professionals work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home health providing treatments and performing tests related to the lungs, airway, and occasionally the heart. Many of the procedures they perform are advanced, lifesaving techniques, making the career both demanding and rewarding.

Physical Therapy Assistant

Another great option for contributing to a patient's plan for recovery is getting involved in physical therapy. Many patients only see a doctor every few weeks but may see their physical therapists and their assistants weekly or even daily. This makes a great career option for people who are interested in getting to know their patients really well.

Radiology Technician

If versatility sounds good to you, this might be your career. A radiology technician performs x-rays and other tests to diagnose a variety of conditions. You could work in an emergency room, a orthopedic surgeon's office, or many other places. The work provides critical information to help patients with injuries and illnesses, so you're a central part of the team.

Medical Assistant

You can be part of the team, or you can be the organization behind the team. While doctors spearhead the care of patients, medical office assistants keep the system flowing. They handle scheduling, billing, and even certain patient care activities. It is a very fast-growing career field, so there are lots of options for graduates of medical assistant programs. Your job security will also be very high.

A career in the medical field appeals to a lot of people, but many of them are turned away by the idea of having to spend so many years on their education. Fortunately, there are plenty of other great career fields out there for people who aspire to be involved in patient care. Medicine is full of opportunities beyond just becoming a doctor, and those careers still give you hands-on experience in patient care.
