The nine historically Black fraternities and sororities are intensifying their efforts to promote voter awareness and registration during this election year. This initiative is a core component of their mission and reflects their commitment to ensuring that all community members are informed and engaged in the democratic process. Tiffany Hefney, President of the Rock Hill chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, emphasized that the organization remains nonpartisan, meaning it does not endorse specific candidates. Instead, their focus is on facilitating voter registration and turnout, encouraging participation regardless of political affiliation.
Hefney explained that their voter engagement efforts are consistent with past practices, highlighting that their work is not a reaction to current events but a continuation of longstanding traditions. The organization aims to ensure that all eligible voters have the necessary information and support to make their voices heard in national elections. This approach is designed to foster a strong, informed electorate and uphold democratic values within the communities they serve.
The push for voter registration and awareness is part of a broader, coordinated effort involving 14 nonpartisan organizations, as noted by Sharon Wallace, President of the Rock Hill National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). These groups are collaborating to mobilize voters across various sectors, including schools, nursing homes, and through community canvassing. The collaboration seeks to replicate the high voter turnout seen in the 2020 presidential election, which was the highest in over a century, with approximately 66% of the voting-eligible population participating.
The initiative also includes participation from fraternities such as Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated. Ashley Grant, the keeper of the books for the Rock Hill chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, underscored the importance of visible and active engagement in the voting process. By encouraging men and others within their communities to vote, the fraternity aims to reinforce the message that voting is a critical civic duty.
Overall, the campaign's objective is to mobilize chapters and members nationwide, ensuring robust voter participation and reinforcing the importance of civic engagement. This comprehensive approach reflects the organizations' ongoing dedication to empowering communities and enhancing democratic involvement.
